Valentin Vacherot will bid to continue his dream run in Shanghai when he locks horns with Holger Rune for the first time.
The qualifier took down his third seed of the tournament as he beat Tallon Griekspoor 4-6 7-6 6-4 to become the first ever Monegasque player to reach a tour-level quarter-final.
Rune was typically resilient and dogged in his 6-5 6-7 6-3 triumph over Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard but will know this is a tricky encounter ahead of him despite the 10th seed being a heavy favourite over the world number 204.
Vacherot has nothing to lose and will hit freely, making this a dangerous situation for the Dane, who will be desperate to reach his seventh Masters 1000 semi-final.
Given the names Vacherot has beaten so far this week, it’s difficult to suggest he won’t rise to the occasion, but Rune does have a knack for delivering in clutch moments and his solid form of late means his tennis is in good shape to see him through this one, although it may go the distance once more.
