Holger Rune vs Daniel Altmaier prediction

Holger Rune made his long-awaited tour-level return at the Japan Open last week, having been out for a year with a ruptured Achilles injury. Rune had already competed in the Davis Cup, winning both of his singles matches for Denmark against Bulgaria. However, he was defeated by Kyrian Jacquet in Tokyo. Rune now turns his attention to the Shanghai Masters. 

He will play Daniel Altmaier in the first-round. The German attempted to qualify for the China Open last time out but lost in the first stage to Jie Cui. That extended his losing streak to four matches, and he is without a win since the opening round of the Winston-Salem Open back in August. Altmaier’s best tour-level result of the season was his semi-final run in Halle, but his record on hard courts has been very disappointing in 2026. He has lost 11 of his 14 matches on the surface. 

Rune leads the head-to-head 2-0. This represents an ideal opportunity for the 23-year-old to secure his first ATP victory of the season.
