Heather Watson qualified for the main draw at Queen’s after encouraging victories over Ena Shibahara and Zeynep Sonmez. She aimed for a deep run at the Birmingham Classic last week but lost in the second-round to Jessika Ponchet in a close three set match. Watson has struggled to qualify for main draws this season though did reach the semi-finals of the Puerto Vallarta Open in late March.
The 33-year-old usually produces her best level on grass and takes on Yulia Putintseva in the first-round here. The Kazakhstani made the third-round of the French Open before losing to Mirra Andreeva.
They have played each other on five occasions, with Watson leading the head-to-head 3-2. She also won their only encounter on grass two years ago but that only occurred due to a Putintseva injury.
Despite the Brit having the upper hand in their matches, Putintseva had a very strong grass court season last year as she won the event in Birmingham and reached the fourth-round of Wimbledon for the first time. Watson is likely to cause problems but the Kazakhstani should be expected to make it through.
