Hailey Baptiste booked her place in the next round of Indian Wells as she came from a set down to beat Emiliana Arango. The first two sets were split, but Arango looked to have taken an early advantage in the decider after breaking in the first service game. However, Baptiste responded with two consecutive breaks and consolidated to win 2-6 6-2 6-3 after two hours and seven minutes.
She takes on third seed Elena Rybakina in round two. The 2023 champion received a bye in round one. It’s already been a successful season for Rybakina as she captured her second Grand Slam title in Melbourne, following a win over world number one Aryna Sabalenka. She was forced to retire from the Dubai Tennis Championships a fortnight ago, but she is fit and raring to go here.
They have played each other on one previous occasion, with Rybakina winning in the second-round of the Canadian Open last year. She claimed a straight sets victory, and the odds will be in her favour for a similar type of result here.
