Grigor Dimitrov has not featured on the tour since retiring midway through his first-round match against Ethan Quinn at the French Open due to a thigh problem. He was due to feature at Queen’s but pulled out before he faced Gael Monfils. The Bulgarian is struggling with injuries on a regular basis and had to withdraw from his fourth-round match with Daniil Medvedev at the All England Club last year.
Yoshihito Nishioka is another player who is beset by injuries. He retired during his match in Stuttgart qualifying against Learner Tien and then failed to win another qualifier in Halle after a defeat to Yannick Hanfmann. He made the second-round here last year.
Dimitrov leads the head-to-head 3-0 and won all of those matches without the drop of a set but this will be their first meeting on grass. Both players have fitness problems, but an injury-free Dimitrov will be the overwhelming favourite to advance.
