Grigor Dimitrov suffered a surprising loss in the fourth-round of the Madrid Open last time out, losing to Canadian Gabriel Diallo. The Bulgarian had three match points in the second set tiebreak but lost 5-7 7-6 6-4. His other clay court appearance was in Monte-Carlo, where he won three matches on the trot before a scarcely believable 6-0 6-0 defeat to Alex de Minaur in the quarter-finals. Despite that defeat, the Bulgarian’s form recently has been pretty solid, having also made the semi-finals of Miami just over a month ago.
Francesco Passaro marked his return from injury with a three set victory over Chun-Hsin Tseng in the first-round. The Italian made a blistering start and despite a blip in the second set, managed to win 6-0 2-6 6-3.
These two have met before on one occasion earlier this year, with Passaro winning their first-round encounter at the Australian Open after Dimitrov was forced to retire due to injury. This time around, the Bulgarian should be expected to make it through in straight sets.
