TSZ OVERVIEW

The hugely controversial breakaway golf tour known as LIV Golf will get underway at the Centurion Club in London on Thursday. Some high-profile players have opted to play in this maiden event rather than appearing on the PGA Tour or the DP World Tour with many eyebrows raised regarding their decisions. Several players have in fact resigned from the PGA Tour in order to participate in this competition with former world number one Dustin Johnson the biggest name to do just that earlier in the week.

The LIV Golf Invitational Series will be unique as it is played over just 54 holes rather than 72 with shotgun starts while there is no cut, meaning all 48 players will remain in with a chance of climbing the leaderboard up until the last hole. There is also a team element with 12 captains selected before a draft takes place to decide the teams with a prize $5m prize pool on offer at each event. Added to the $20m pot on offer for the individual event, this will be the richest golf tournament ever hosted on British soil.

TSZ TIPS

BERND WIESBERGER

  • Bernd Wiesberger made history as he was the first pick in the draft for the team event as Graeme McDowell selected the Austrian for the Niblicks and that could prove to be a very shrewd pick.
  • The 36-year-old is a two-time winner of the Rolex Series on the European Tour with one of those successes coming in the 2019 Scottish Open so he is no stranger to winning in the UK and his ball-striking ability should work a treat around Centurion Club.

TIP: Winner e/w (20/1)

IAN POULTER

  • Ian Poulter has not really threatened on the PGA Tour of late but he will believe a change in scenery and competition could result in a change of fortune in his twilight years with the Englishman capable of challenging in this opening LIV Golf event.
  • Poulter has shown he can produce the goods when it matters, especially when representing Europe in the Ryder Cup and he can lay down a marker here by competing for the honours in this maiden event.

TIP: Winner e/w (28/1)

MAJESTICKS

  • Captain Poulter selected an all-English team for the Majesticks with Lee Westwood, Sam Horsfield and Laurie Canter making up an intriguing team for this opening event.
  • The quartet will be keen on making an impression, especially as it is on home soil and Westwood can lead the way along with fellow veteran Poulter to help their team claim the victory in the first running of this unique format.

TIP: Winners
