In some ways it feels like Gian van Veen is still recovering from his PDC World Darts Championship final defeat to Luke Littler at the beginning of 2026, as he has not managed to win a title in the current calendar year.
The Dutchman certainly hasn't been helped by a kidney stone issued that reared its head during his debut Premier League campaign either, but you feel it is only a matter of time before he rediscovers his best darts.
This is a tough opener for him though, as Polish opponent Krzysztof Ratajski is coming off the back of winning the European Tour title in Leverkusen last weekend. In fact, he claimed the scalp of Van Veen on his way to his 12th PDC title.
If you take a closer look at Ratajski's run in Leverkusen though, he only averaged over 95 on one occasion, so it's not like he's playing at an incredible level.
Van Veen is the favourite with the bookies but this one isn't clear cut. Don't be surprised if this goes close.
