Gael Monfils is not in any kind of form heading into Wimbledon after first-round defeats at the Stuttgart Open and Queen’s Club to Alex Michelsen and Mackenzie McDonald respectively. Despite making his debut here in 2005, he has only got past the first week of the tournament on one occasion. The Frenchman has never truly excelled on the grass throughout his long career.
Ugo Humbert, by contrast, seems to flourish on the surface and has already shown his quality on grass by making the semi-finals in Stuttgart and Eastbourne. He took the first set against Jenson Brooksby in the latter event but failed to get the job done. Nevertheless, Humbert seems to have recovered from the hand injury that plagued much of his clay court campaign and will be full of confidence, having made the fourth-round here last year.
Humbert leads the head-to-head 3-2 and 1-0 on grass. They played against each other in the first-round of Wimbledon six years ago with Monfils retiring after Humbert had staged a comeback from two sets down to a break up in the decider. He will be a resounding favourite to register a second win on grass against the 39-year-old.
