Gael Monfils has featured in just two tournaments since his second-round defeat at Wimbledon and they were both short-lived. He lost in the first-round of the Washington Open to Yibling Wu in straight sets and was the on the end of a surprising defeat to Tomas Barrios Vera in round one of the Canadian Open. The 39-year-old has struggled with form and fitness but does have a title on a hard court in 2025 after winning the Auckland Open at the start of the year.
His first-round opponent at Flushing Meadows is Roman Safiullin. The Russian has won two out of his last five matches, with second-round appearances in Toronto and Cincinnati. He competed in Winston-Salem, his most recent event, but produced a poor showing as he lost to Christopher O’Connell in round one.
Monfils is showing signs of age, but he always raises his level for the Grand Slams and will hope to put on a show for the American crowd. It may take him four or five sets, but he will be the favourite to advance.
