Gael Monfils is in a rich vein of form right now as after winning the ASB Classic in Auckland just over a week ago, he is playing some superb tennis in Melbourne now.
After coming through a battle of attrition against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the first round, he then beat Daniel Altmaier. In the third round, he was paired with fourth-seed Taylor Fritz and after losing the first set, he turned the match around and reeled off the next three sets to win.
He now meets American 22-year-old Ben Shelton in what promises to be a mouth-watering affair. Shelton has had a series of tricky matches to come through but he has done so against Brandon Nakashima, Pablo Carreno Busta and then Lorenzo Musetti last time out.
He has had to face a variety of styles and he has managed to impose his game on his opponents to win through and he will hope to do the same here once again.
