Gabriel Diallo vs Lorenzo Sonego prediction
Gabriel Diallo won his first-round match after Benjamin Bonzi retired early in the fifth set. Diallo had come from two sets to love down to force a decider, with Bonzi retiring at 3-1 down. The Canadian reached the quarter-finals of the Eastbourne Open last week.
He will face Lorenzo Sonego in the second-round. Sonego defeated Tomas Martin Etcheverry in four sets. The Italian was broken just once in the match but was tested by Etcheverry, winning 6-4 6-4 6-7 (2) 7-6 after three hours and 38 minutes. His best result at SW19 were two round-of-16 appearances in 2021 and 2025.
Sonego leads the head-to-head 1-0 after a victory in Auckland last year. Both players have struggled in terms of consistent results this season, but they can take plenty of confidence from their first-round matches. However, Diallo cannot afford a similarly slow start against Sonego, who has shown how dangerous he can be on grass in the past.
