Gabriel Diallo was on the verge of a true breakthrough in Shanghai but exited at the round-of-16 stage after a tight three set loss to Zizou Bergs. Nevertheless, that was his best result for quite some time on the ATP Tour after a period of middling form. It has still been a breakthrough year for the Canadian, who is close to cracking the top 30 of the world rankings and picked up the first title of his career at the Libema Open in June.
His first-round opponent will be Amir Omarkhanov. The 17-year-old from Kazakhstan was handed a wildcard for the tournament in Altmaty and will be making his ATP Tour debut. He competed in the qualifying for this event last season, losing to Great Britain’s Dan Evans in straight sets. His best results this season have been four quarter-finals on the ITF circuit.
This should be a very straight-forward win for Diallo against the youngster.
