Francisco Comesana has been unable to win consecutive matches at a tournament since his run to the round-of-16 in Cincinnati two months ago. In terms of his Asian swing, he only competed at the Shanghai Masters and lost comprehensively in round two to Lorenzo Musetti. The Argentine’s best form was during the South American clay court season in February, where he got through to the last four in Rio. That stands as his best result on the ATP Tour so far this season.
David Goffin had endured struggles with form and injury for quite some time, but he did recapture some of his old magic in Shanghai as he beat Ben Shelton in straight sets to make the third-round. However, the 34-year-old could not maintain his fitness, and he was forced to retire against Gabriel Diallo having gone 3-0 down.
This is a home tournament for Goffin, with the event being staged in Belgium, and that will give him extra motivation to put in a strong display against Comesana, who has never fared too well indoors.
