Two in-form stars on the cusp of the world’s top 20 will battle it out for a place in the last four in Madrid. 

Francisco Cerundolo booked his spot in his third Masters 1000 quarter-final of the year as he continued his perfect record against top seed Alexander Zverev.

The two-time champion saw his hopes of the hat-trick bluntly ended by the Argentine, who defeated the world number two for the second straight year in the Spanish capital to move to 3-0 in their head-to-head.

Cerundolo will lock horns with the 19-year-old Jakub Mensik, who is just the fifth teenager ever to reach this stage of the history. 

The Miami Open champion eased to a 6-3 6-2 triumph over Alexander Bublik to reach his third Masters 1000 quarter-final of the season and tee up a second career meeting with Cerundolo. 

The South American prevailed 7-6 6-1 in Beijing last year but this one is so tight to call. 

It may well go the distance with Mensik targeting what would be a 10th win on the spin.
