Francesca Jones’ season began in fine fashion, as she defeated Emma Navarro in the first-round of the Auckland Open. This was followed up by a win against Sinja Kraus to make the quarter-finals, where she would lose to Xinyu Wang after retiring in the second set. The Brit’s physical problems continued in the first-round of the Australian Open as she was forced to retire once more against Linda Klimovicova.
She takes on Peyton Stearns in round one. Stearns’ best result of the season was a third-round appearance in Melbourne. However, her results have been less impressive in recent weeks, as she only made the main draw of Dubai as a lucky loser, reaching the second-round. Stearns was also defeated in round one of the Qatar Open.
Stearns should still have enough quality to beat Jones but if the Brit can recapture the level she found in Auckland, this will be more of a battle.
