Frances Tiafoe vs Yosuke Watanuki prediction

Frances Tiafoe reached the Washington quarter-finals last time out. He defeated Los Cabos finalist Aleksander Kovacevic and Flavio Cobolli but lost 7-6 6-4 to Ben Shelton despite having the opportunity to serve for the first set. 

The American faces Yosuke Watanuki to begin his campaign in Toronto. The Japanese came from a set down to beat Daniel Altmaier in his first-round match. Watanuki dominated the second set and grabbed an early break in the first game of the third, which proved to be decisive. 

The head-to-head is locked at 1-1. Tiafoe came from a set down to defeat Watanuki in the second-round of Miami two years ago but it was the Japanese that won their last match earlier this year in the third-round of Indian Wells, winning in straight sets.

Though there is large difference in the rankings between the two players, Tiafoe has struggled against Watanuki in the past. He will be a clear favourite to win but the world number 158 will certainly be up for the challenge against the American as they face each other for the third time.
