Frances Tiafoe is now just one match away from back-to-back quarter-finals at the French Open as he staged a magnificent recovery from two sets down to beat qualifier Jaime Faria. Tiafoe looked to be exiting the tournament after Faria built a lead, but he crucially won the third set on a tiebreak and then raced clear in the next two to win 4-6 6-7 (2) 7-6 (4) 6-1 6-2.
He now faces Matteo Arnaldi. The Italian continued his return to form with a five set win over Raphael Collignon. Arnaldi beat 2021 finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas in the previous round and produced a brilliant fightback here to win 6-4 6-7 (5) 5-7 6-4 7-6 (4). The Italian has struggled with injury for quite some time, but he won a Challenger event in Cagliari right at the start of May and seems to be on his way back.
The head-to-head is locked at 1-1, but Arnaldi leads 1-0 on clay after a win in Madrid last year. Tiafoe may look to be the aggressor from the start here, but Arnaldi seems to be fit and firing again, and he can cause problems with his consistency.
