Ben Shelton gave the greatest indication yet that he could realise his Grand Slam title-winning ambitions by dethroning Carlos Alcaraz.
The American wowed the New York crowd with a 6-7 6-1 6-3 1-6 7-6 win over the seven-time Major winner to book a spot in the last four.
The eighth seed will now face his compatriot Frances Tiafoe for a place in the 2026 final after Big Foe came from two sets down to end the run of Alex Michelsen.
This is their fifth meeting with Showtime Ben leading the match-up 3-1, although it is 1-1 at the US Open after Tiafoe prevailed in five in 2024 in response to Shelton’s four-set success 12 months earlier.
It’s sure to be box office with both men desperate to reach a maiden Major final and although we’d back Shelton as the outright winner, we can only see this one being a long-haul encounter with both men having their say.
