THE PREDICTION

An enthralling European Championships which couldn’t have shined a better light on the women’s game will be afforded a fitting conclusion as famous footballing rivals England and Germany do battle at a sold-out Wembley in the final of Euro 2022. Whilst the Lionesses are on the hunt for the first major international trophy in their history after an incredible 4-0 semi-final thrashing of Sweden, eight-time European champions Germany are out to spoil the party for the home crowd and create history themselves. These two nations have done battle before in a major European final, Germany beating England back in 2009 but a long time has passed since then and there is a feeling that this England side is ready to go all the way under the stewardship of Sarina Wiegman. The Dutch head coach masterminded her home nation’s Euro 2017 triumph and her tactical nous shown across this tournament shows that she is capable of turning England’s fortunes around even if they fall behind in this final as they did against Spain in the quarter-finals.

Germany are a well-oiled machine capable of mixing style with grit and determination, making them such a strong unit to play against and they are likely to try and break up play as much as possible here, preventing England from playing their natural game. Should attacker Klara Buhl not recover from Covid-19 in time for this final, it would be a blow for head coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg, but as shown in Germany’s semi-final victory over France, she has the strength-in-depth within her squad to cope without Buhl. Alexandra Popp provides a significant goalscoring threat, having already racked up six goals across the tournament alongside England’s Beth Mead.

Both nations have conceded just one goal over the course of Euro 2022 and despite the offensive capabilities of both teams, goals are likely to be in short supply across the 90 minutes, as one might expect with so much at stake and the two sides unlikely to push a high number of bodies forward whilst the score remains level. However, it cannot be understated just how strong England looked against Sweden and as good as Germany are defensively, it’s difficult to see them being able to keep out their opponents under the guidance of Wiegman and her staff. It’s also important to mention the psychological power of the home support, which will give the England players a huge boost as this final goes on and fatigue starts to take hold. Therefore, in what should prove an unforgettable spectacle, consider backing England to end their major trophy drought and lift the Euro 2022 trophy.
