After shocking European football last season by winning Ligue 1 ahead of PSG, Lille will surprise many once again should they make it through Group G in this season’s Champions League. Since becoming the champions of France, Lille have lost head coach Christophe Gaultier and a number of players such as midfielder Boubakary Soumare and goalkeeper Mike Maignan. The change in personnel has been reflected in their results so far this season, having won just one of their five league games played so far. On the contrary, German side Wolfsburg’s standards have not dipped so far this season following the departure of Oliver Glasner in the summer after leading them to a fourth-place finish in the Bundesliga in 2020-21. New boss Mark van Bommel has led Die Wolfe to the top of the table after four games with a 100% record. Such a fantastic start has been built upon outstanding defensive foundations with just one league goal conceded so far in this campaign and this will likely prove a frustrating evening for the Lille attack attempting to breach such a solid backline. Combine that with the threat Wolfsburg pose going forward through the likes of Wout Weghorst, against a defence yet to keep a Ligue 1 clean sheet in 2021-22 and Wolfsburg are well worth backing for victory via the draw no bet market.
