THE LOWDOWN
BORUSSIA DORTMUND
Edin Terzic is under a fair bit of pressure at Borussia Dortmund and there is an expectation that he will perhaps be departing the club at the end of the season but he has the chance to create some history as they welcome Atletico Madrid to the Signal Iduna Park with the deficit in this tie at just one goal.
Dortmund were by far the weaker team in the first-leg at the Metropolitano last week but a late Sebastian Haller strike means they have a real chance for this one. They come into this one on the back of an impressive and hard-fought 2-1 defeat of Borussia Monchengladbach at Borussia-Park at the weekend.
ATLETICO MADRID
Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid have often played a style of football known as ‘Cholismo’ which can be fairly tedious for the neutral but they have evolved and expanded that style. They showed real signs of that evolution last week as they raced into a 2-0 lead and were dominant for large parts but retreating into their shell, as is their want, has left this a nervy second-leg for Los Rojiblancos.
Atletico backed up that defeat of Dortmund by impressively defeating high flying Girona by three goals to one at the weekend. Artem Dovbyk scored a fourth minute opener in that game in the Spanish capital before a brace from Antoine Griezmann as well as a goal from Angel Correa cemented Atletico’s spot in the top four in La Liga.
THE TEAM NEWS
BORUSSIA DORTMUND
Jadon Sancho was unavailable for the weekend’s clash with Borussia Monchengladbach due to illness and he is a doubt for this week. Jamie Bynoe-Gittens and Sebastian Haller have also picked up injuries since the first-leg.
PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Kobel; Ryerson, Hummels, Schlotterbeck, Maatsen; Sabitzer, Can; Sancho, Brandt, Reus; Fullkrug
UNAVAILABLE: Bamba (Injured), Bensebaini (Injured), Haller (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: Bynoe-Gittens (Injured), Sancho (Illness)
ATLETICO MADRID
Diego Simeone remains without key attacker, Round of 16 hero and Netherlands international Memphis Depay, for this second-leg. Samuel Lino picked up a yellow card last week and will be suspended for this trip to Germany, too.
PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Oblak; Witsel, Gimenez, Azpilicueta; Molina, Llorente, Koke, De Paul, Riquelme; Griezmann, Morata
UNAVAILABLE: Lino (Suspended), Depay (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: Saul (Injured), Lemar (Injured)
THE KEY STATS
THE PREDICTION
This match really shouldn’t be as close as it is as we head into the second-leg but there is a real opportunity for Borussia Dortmund to squeeze themselves past Atletico. However, there is an argument that this game is perfectly set up for the aforementioned style of ‘Cholismo’. Atletico are no longer a water tight defence but sitting back, soaking up pressure and hitting Dortmund on the counter attack with Antoine Griezmann and the perpetual motion of Marcos Llorente means the visitors seem a good value back here. Samuel Lino’s absence, for that reason, is an irritation for Atletico but their experience and nous against a Dortmund team hit by injury and illness looks a good bet.
TIP: ATLETICO MADRID TO WIN
