This unusual 2022-23 club season, due to the 2022 FIFA World Cup causing a mid-season stoppage, could throw up some unique and different matches in the second-half of the campaign.

The UEFA Champions League knockouts begin, as ever, in mid-February and history, like Leo Messi notching five against Bayer Leverkusen in 2012, is there to made. Given the possibility of added drama and strange circumstances this year, this is a look at the players to have scored four or more goals in a UEFA Champions League match.

Only two players have managed to score five and notice that one of those two is indeed the current FIFA World Cup winning captain, Lionel Messi. Messi is the one of two players to have scored four or more on two occasions alongside Robert Lewandowski. The Argentinian managed to do it twice in the knockout stages of the competition, though.

Of the 18 times that a player has scored four or more goals in a UEFA Champions League match, it has only happened five times in knockout football with the vast majority, it could be argued, coming against relatively poor opposition in the group stage.
