THE LOWDOWN

VILLARREAL

In the November international break, Villarreal moved onto their third manager of the campaign with former Olympique de Marseille and Valencia boss Marcelino replacing Pacheta, who had previously replaced Quique Setien earlier on in the campaign. The Yellow Submarine are looking to finish an underwhelming campaign with a flourish.

Prior to the March international break, they nearly came from 4-0 down against Marseille in the Round of 16 of the UEFA Europa League but eventually lost the tie by five goals to three on aggregate. In La Liga, though, they have returned to the top-half of the table with a 1-0 win over Valencia making it four successive victories.

ATLETICO MADRID

It has been a very bizarre campaign for Diego Simeone and Atletico Madrid. Their season appeared to be unravelling as they lost their Copa del Rey semi-final to Athletic Club by four goals to nil on aggregate before then also slipping out of the top four and the UEFA Champions League spots behind Athletic due to some really underwhelming results in La Liga.

However, in the UEFA Champions League, Los Rojiblancos came from 2-0 down on aggregate to defeat Italy’s champions-elect, Internazionale, on penalties at the Metropolitano in the Round of 16 to set up a quarter-final with Borussia Dortmund next month. Their most recent outing saw them hammered 3-0 by Barcelona after losing 2-0 to Cadiz, too.

THE PREDICTION

Villarreal started the season slowly and they are heading into the final few months of the campaign with very little to play for. However, there is an incentive to build towards being a part of the Marcelino-coached side next year because there is an expectation of major improvement. Atletico Madrid are in a bit of strife domestically with their heroic penalty shootout win over Inter really staving off some serious pressure for Simeone’s men. Villarreal will sense blood and them scoring is likely but Atletico still have enough firepower to cause problems themselves.
