THE LOWDOWN
Real Valladolid
Ahead of this midweek round of fixtures, Real Valladolid have slipped into the bottom three and the relegation places after a difficult run of form. Their most recent outing, a 2-0 defeat away to Cadiz at the weekend, means they have now suffered five successive La Liga defeats.
The home team were holding their relegation rivals Cadiz on Friday evening until mid-way through the second-half. However, a Theo Bongonda brace in the 69th and 76th minute, followed by a Martin Hongla red card, has piled the pressure on Valladolid.
Following promotion from the second-tier last season, any route to survival would be viewed as success but this will hurt Valladolid because it had seemed like they were destined to be comfortably safe. They have scored just 30 goals in their 35 games so far this season.
Barcelona
With three games of the season to go and the title already wrapped up, Barcelona are in a position where they could be guilty of coasting towards the end of the season, hoping to conclude as quickly as possible. The Catalans were beaten 2-1 by Real Sociedad in their most recent outing, at the weekend.
After an entertaining 4-2 win at their city rivals, Espanyol, to win the title, Barca followed that up with their first defeat at Camp Nou in the league this season. Mikel Merino and Alexander Sorloth gave La Real a 2-0 lead before a late Robert Lewandowski consolation.
Barca have been on course for a record-breaking defensive performance this season with Marc-Andre ter Stegen being their key player throughout the campaign. However, they have now gone from conceding nine goals in 33 games to six goals in their last two.
THE PREDICTION
Real Valladolid are staring an immediate return to the second-tier in the face after underwhelming performances look set to conclude what had appeared to be an impressive campaign of over achievement. Barcelona are also at risk of drifting out to the end of the season after what has been a good campaign, despite The Blaugrana's performances having been generally unconvincing, or at least at a lower level than when Xavi had arrived last season. Valladolid struggle to score and, aside from recent matches, Barca rarely concede. A low-scoring away win is expected.
