THE LOWDOWN

GRANADA

Following promotion last season, Granada have endured a really difficult campaign as they begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting firmly in the bottom three and the relegation places after 20 matches. The Andalusians come into this one on the back of a slender 1-0 loss to regional rivals Real Betis in their most recent outing, last weekend.

That defeat to Betis at the Benito Villamarin was their third loss in their last four matches and they have managed just two wins all season long. Uruguayan coach Alexander Medina, who replaced Paco Lopez earlier this season, is beginning to build upon some improved performances and results of late as they battle against the drop.

ATLETICO MADRID

Atletico Madrid had a turbulent and topsy-turvy week in the build-up to their return to La Liga action. Los Rojiblancos were beaten by city rivals Real Madrid in the semi-finals of the Supercopa de Espana but they then pulled off an excellent 4-2 defeat of Madrid after extra-time in the Round of 16 of the Copa del Rey last Thursday.

Atletico, though, went into their mini Liga winter break on the back of a major dip in form as they slipped outside of the top four and the UEFA Champions League qualifying spots. They have managed just one victory in their last four matches in the league after a 4-3 defeat to Girona in Catalonia kicked off their 2024.

THE TEAM NEWS

GRANADA

Midfielder Martin Hongla is unavailable for this weekend’s visit of Atletico Madrid with his involvement at the Africa Cup of Nations.

PREDICTED XI (4-4-2): Batalla; Mendez, Piatkowski, Miquel, Neva; Zaragoza, Ruiz, Villar, Callejon; Uzuni, Boye

UNAVAILABLE: Hongla (International duty)

QUESTIONABLE: Fernandez (Injured)

ATLETICO MADRID

Atletico Madrid do not have a long list of absentees with Thomas Lemar remaining a doubt for this weekend, whilst Reinildo is away at the Africa Cup of Nations.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Oblak; Witsel, Gimenez, Hermoso; Llorente, De Paul, Koke, Saul, Lino; Morata, Griezmann

UNAVAILABLE: Reinildo (International duty), Vitolo (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Lemar (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

As mentioned, Granada are beginning to show signs of life down at the bottom end of the table under Alexander Medina. However, the home team do still appear destined for the drop. Atletico Madrid will be hoping for a major push between now and the end of the campaign and they have been a lot more entertaining to watch throughout this season but especially in the calendar year of 2024. They have played four matches across all competitions this year with those four goals consisting of 24 goals. So, with Atletico favourites against a struggling but improving Granada side, it could be quite a fun watch on Monday evening.

TIP: ATLETICO MADRID TO WIN & OVER 2.5 GOALS
