THE LOWDOWN

GIRONA

Girona gained promotion back to the Spanish top-flight in 2022 and, under the management of Michel, they performed very well to finish just outside of the top seven and the European qualification spots. They have lost key players such as Santiago Bueno, Oriol Romeu and Valentin Castellanos over the summer but the Catalans have remained impressive.

At the beginning of this weekend’s round of fixtures, they currently sit comfortably tucked inside the top four. They have managed four victories with a draw in their opening five matches. They come into this on the back of a thrilling 4-2 win away to newly-promoted Granada in their most recent outing, last weekend.

MALLORCA

In the latter stages of the 2021/22, Real Mallorca ‘broke glass’ and appointed Javier Aguirre to fire fight against relegation. The Balearic Islanders managed to comfortably avoid relegation and then ended up finishing in the middle-of-the-table last season. They lost Lee Kang-in to Paris Saint-Germain in the summer but have spent quite ambitiously in the rest of the window.

Mallorca come into this on the back of a much-needed 1-0 win away to Celta in Galicia with Vedat Muriqi notching his first of the Liga season after scoring a brace for Kosovo against Switzerland during the international break. Aguirre had been under pressure before that win with no win in their opening four matches of the season.

MALLORCA

THE PREDICTION

Many would have expected these two sides finishing very close in the league table but that is not the way the two sides have started this season. Girona will be hoping to challenge for a top seven finish and European qualification as a consequence. They face a Mallorca side that will be feeling the pressure after another simmer of relatively heavy investment. Girona are favourites for this encounter on Saturday afternoon, especially with their home advantage.

TIP: GIRONA TO WIN
