THE LOWDOWN

GIRONA

Girona gained promotion to the top-flight in 2022 and didn’t just survive but performed really well and in an entertaining manner, as one of the teams that scored and conceded the most. The Catalans, under the management of Michel, have since coped very well despite the loss of both Oriol Romeu and Valentin Castellanos.

They shared an opening draw in the Basque Country away to Real Sociedad but have since managed eight victories and just one defeat in nine matches with that one loss coming at home to Real Madrid, going down by three goals to nil. They come into this on the back of a thrilling 5-2 hammering of Almeria, last weekend.

CELTA VIGO

Last season, Celta Vigo sacked Eduardo Coudet mid-way through the season with the Galicians struggling. They immediately improved under Carlos Carvalhal before eventually drifting but still managing to avoid the drop. Over the summer, they appointed Rafa Benitez and hoped for better but the sale of Gabri Veiga was a disappointing sign of things to come.

Their performances have improved and been relatively steady throughout the campaign but they have managed just one win in their opening ten matches so far this season. A 3-0 hammering at the hands of Atletico Madrid last weekend means they remain firmly in the bottom three and the relegation places with pressure growing on Benitez.

THE TEAM NEWS

GIRONA

Michel has dealt well with several injury concerns throughout the season and the hosts remain without the likes of Borja Garcia and Bernardo Espinosa.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-2-1): Gazzaniga; E.Garcia, Lopez, Blind; Couto, Herrera, A.Garcia, Gutierrez; Martin, Savio; Dovbyk

UNAVAILABLE: Borja Garcia (Injured), Juan Carlos (Injured), Espinosa (Injured), Casals (Injured), Artero (Injured), Villa (Injured)

CELTA VIGO

Celta Vigo have a few injury concerns with two left-backs, Mihailo Ristic and Joseph Aidoo, both unavailable, as well as forward Carles Perez.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Guaita; Vazquez, Starfelt, Nunez, Sanchez; Mingueza, Beltran, de la Torre; Aspas, Strand Larsen, Bamba

UNAVAILABLE: Villar (Suspended), Aidoo (Injured), Perez (Injured), Ristic (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

There will come a point, like many believe and expect, that Girona will fall away as is their expectation. However, the home team are playing so well that they could well have achieved safety, their primary goal, before the New Year. Rafa Benitez looks as though he may only have had a short stay in Galicia with the former Liverpool boss under serious pressure. It would take something bizarre and out of the ordinary for this one to not be a home win.

TIP: GIRONA TO WIN
