THE LOWDOWN

ALAVES

The Mendizorrotza has been one of the tougher places to go in La Liga in the last half a decade and Alaves will be reliant on home advantage if they are to avoid relegation this year, following their promotion back to the top-flight via the playoffs last season. The Basque club play in a stereotypically rough and rugged ‘Basque’ style of football, under the management of Luis Garcia Plata.

The home team have managed two victories in their opening seven matches of the 2023/24 La Liga campaign. They come into this on the back of a 1-1 draw away to Celta Vigo in Galicia, only equalising once their opposition had been limited to ten men. Four defeats in six games before that will be a major concern moving forward.

OSASUNA

Osasuna finished seventh and reached the Copa del Rey final last season so they will have come into this season expecting another historic campaign. Instead, the Navarre club suffered a UEFA Europa Conference League playoff defeat to Club Brugge in August and have generally started the campaign quite slowly so far.

They were beaten 2-0 by Atletico Madrid in a hotly contested game in Pamplona on Thursday, in which both manager Jago Arrasate and forward Chimy Avila were sent off in controversial circumstances. They have now suffered three defeats in their last four matches as they begin the weekend sitting in the bottom-half of the table.

THE TEAM NEWS

ALAVES

Alaves’ only absentee remains Giuliano Simeone, who joined on loan from Atletico in the summer but then suffered a horrific leg-break in pre-season.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Sivera; Gorosabel, Marin, Sedlar, Lopez; Guridi, Guevara; Sola, Hagi, Rebbach; Samu

OSASUNA

Osasuna will be without their key forward, Chimy Avila, who is out suspended alongside the long-term absentees of Raul Garcia and Darko Brasanac.

PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Fernandez; Areso, Catena, David Garcia, Cruz; Ibanez, Torro, Oroz; Barja, Budimir, Mojica

THE PREDICTION

This is not quite a derby but both teams are from similar and close regions and play similar styles of football. Alaves, as mentioned, will be reliant on their home advantage so will seek to get after their visitors. Osasuna will be frustrated at the loss of both Chimy Avila and their coach Jago Arrasate and they will be concerned about coming away from the neighbouring Basque Country plunged into further trouble. Alaves will be confident against an out of sorts Osasuna side.
