THE PREDICTION
Alaves are slightly more entertaining than they were this season but that doesn’t say much and doesn’t really get reflected in their results. In fact, with former Newcastle striker Joselu leading the line, they haven’t scored more than two goals in a match since a 3-0 victory over Real Valladolid in November 2019. However, they come into this game on the back of four matches in which both teams have scored and a 2-1 win away at Real Madrid and that run also includes draws with Barcelona and Valencia. Only Eibar and Betis (7) have had more red cards than Alaves (6) in the league this season and that combative style is a sign of an attritional yet evolving style of play. They are up against a Real Sociedad side who are beginning to feel it. They are the league leaders but a non-event of a 1-1 draw against Villarreal which suited both sides has been sandwiched by draws to both AZ Alkmaar and Rijeka. Those two draws meaning that the bulk of their main XI will be forced to start should they want to progress to the knockouts next Thursday in Naples. A full strength XI which included David Silva and Mikel Oyarzabal was put out in midweek and this could affect the result against Alaves.
