THE LOWDOWN

SALERNITANA

The story of Salernitana is a bizarre one. They gained a surprise promotion to the top-flight in 2021 but due to being owned by Lazio owner Claudio Lotito, had to find a new owner by New Years’ Eve that year. With seconds remaining, they managed to get a takeover through and avoided administrative relegation but, on the pitch, remained rock-bottom. Davide Nicola, however, performed a miracle great escape to keep them up in 2022.

In 2023, with Salernitana having invested a fair bit of money the previous summer and in lower-mid-table, Nicola was sacked, re-appointed a few days later and then sacked again. Their disorganisation is something that defies their mid-table finish from last year so are and were expected to struggle this season. Yet, once again, they have defied expectation by earning a surprise 2-2 draw with Roma, who were without Jose Mourinho on the touchline as well as key players, at the Stadio Olimpico.

UDINESE

Last season, Udinese went on a six-match winning streak early on and found themselves comfortably fucked inside the top four by mid-October. The Friulians badly fell away, though, and that impressive form at the start of the season actually pretty much kept them up with them eventually finishing in the bottom-half of the table, winning just five of their remaining 30 fixtures.

They have started this season, still under the management of Andrea Sottil, with a continuation of that poor form, being hammered by three goals to nil by Juventus. They were 3-0 down at half-time against The Old Lady and, albeit with some improvement in their performance in the second-half, were comfortably defeated.

THE TEAM NEWS

SALERNITANA

Salernitana are expected to remain unchanged for this weekend as they come into this on the back of an impressive draw at the Stadio Olimpico against Roma.

UDINESE

Udinese, under Andrea Sottil, have some difficulties in picking a lineup for these opening few weeks with Adam Masina, Gerard Deulofeu et al injured for this second match day.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Silvestri; Perez, Bijol, Kabasele; Ebosele, Zarraga, Walace, Lovric, Kamara; Thauvin, Beto

UNAVAILABLE: Masina (Injured), Padelli (Injured), Deulofeu (Injured), Ehizibue (Injured), Ebosse (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Pafundi (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Salernitana are the team that have defied logic for some time in Serie A now and, quite simply, they look like they may do again, if last week is anything to go by. They do come up against an Udinese side who, even without the aforementioned Deulofeu, have some really intriguing attacking options with a front two of Everton target Beto and former France international Florian Thauvin. The visitors will think they can hurt their opposition with those players and both teams scoring in an entertaining encounter would seem quite likely.

TIP: BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
