THE LOWDOWN

INTER MILAN

Simone Inzaghi has coached his Internazionale side into a position whereby they are the ‘champions-elect’ in Serie A. They begin the return from the international break sitting 14 points clear of city rivals Milan at the top-of-the-table as they close in on a 20th Italian title and, therefore, a second star upon their badge.

The Nerazzurri recovered from a UEFA Champions League quarter-final penalty shootout defeat to Atletico Madrid at the Metropolitano a few weeks ago by returning to their charge for the Scudetto by sharing a fairly flat 1-1 draw with defending champions Napoli at San Siro in which the Neapolitans scored a late equaliser.

EMPOLI

In mid-January, former Salernitana and Crotone miracle worker Davide Nicola was assigned a similar task in Florence after the failed stints this season of Paolo Zanetti and Aurelio Andreazzoli. They began impeccably well with a six-match unbeaten run of form being emphatically ended before the March international break.

They suffered three successive 1-0 defeats to Cagliari, AC Milan and Bologna. However, there are mitigating factors for those slender losses as the defeat to Cagliari came against in-form opposition, whilst both Milan and Bologna occupy spots tucked inside Serie A’s top four and are among the strongest in the division.

THE TEAM NEWS

INTER MILAN

Inter have some injury issues for this weekend’s visit of Empoli as Stefan de Vrij, Juan Cuadrado and Marko Arnautovic are missing for the hosts.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Sommer; Pavard, Acerbi, Bastoni; Dumfries, Barella, Calhanoglu, Mkhitaryan, Dimarco; Thuram, Martinez

UNAVAILABLE: De Vrij (Injured), Cuadrado (Injured), Arnautovic (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

EMPOLI

Empoli midfielder Youssef Maleh is missing through suspension for this weekend, whilst the likes of Alberto Grassi and Tyronne Ebuehi are also out injured.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-2-1): Caprile; Bereszynski, Walukiewicz, Luperto; Gyasi, Marin, Kovalenko, Pezzella; Zurkowski, Cambiaghi; Niang

UNAVAILABLE: Maleh (Suspended), Ebuehi (Injured), Ismajli (Injured), Grassi (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Guarino (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Inter are very much the dominant force in Italian football this season but they will be enormously gutted to have missed out on another deep run into the UEFA Champions League. That European hangover may well seep into performances as we move forward with the league title already pretty much wrapped up. As mentioned, despite three defeats on the bounce, Empoli have actually performed relatively well and will be expected to continue their general improvement. Inter should win but it may not be as convincing as expected.

TIP: INTER TO WIN & UNDER 3.5 GOALS
