THE LOWDOWN
FIORENTINA
Under the management of Vincenzo Italiano, it was going to take some going for Fiorentina to top what they managed last season whereby they reached the finals of both the UEFA Europa Conference League and the Coppa Italia. Whilst it looked for a long time they might do just that with a top four challenge underway, I Viola have majorly slipped away of late.
The home team come into this one on the back of a 1-1 draw with Empoli in the Florence derby, last weekend, with Mbaye Niang scoring a second-half equaliser for Empoli in that match. That draw means that Fiorentina have now managed just one win in their last nine matches inside 90 minutes across all competitions.
LAZIO
It has been a fairly bizarre season for Lazio thus far with Maurizio Sarri’s side in general crisis off the pitch, underperforming quite a lot on it and yet still finding themselves in a more than satisfactory position as they head into the final 13 games of the campaign, in touching distance of Europe and also leading their UEFA Champions League tie against Bayern Munich.
They defeated Bayern by a goal to nil thanks to a Ciro Immobile penalty nearly two weeks ago at the Stadio Olimpico but they have since suffered a 2-1 defeat at home to Bologna, despite taking the lead in that match. That loss meant they went into their clash with Torino on Thursday on the back of one win in four matches in Serie A.
THE PREDICTION
This one should have the potential to be a thriller for the neutral but neither side are in good form ahead of their meeting at the Artemio Franchi on Monday. Fiorentina do have the benefit of having not begun their UEFA Europa Conference League knockout stages just yet, whilst Lazio have had a hectic fixture schedule and travelled to Piedmont on Thursday to face Torino. As a result of that, as well as their home advantage, siding with Fiorentina looks the way to go for this one.
