THE LOWDOWN

CAGLIARI

Following their promotion back to the top-flight of Italian football last season via the Serie B playoffs, Cagliari have enjoyed quite an impressive campaign as they compete well against finishing in the bottom three and the relegation places. The Sardinians begin the match day sitting three points clear of 18th.

The home team come into this one on the back of a 3-0 hammering at the hands of Genoa, though, at the Luigi Ferraris last weekend. Morten Thorsby, Morten Frendrup and Albert Gudmundsson notched the goals for Genoa in that game. That result came after a run of just one defeat in nine matches in Serie A.

LECCE

In March, Lecce decided to part company with manager Roberto D’Aversa as a result of some sustained poor performances and results combining with the fact he headbutted Hellas Verona forward Thomas Henry. However, following the appointment of Luca Gotti, things have very much improved for the Apulian club

They come into his one on the back of a 1-1 draw against Monza in their most recent outing, last weekend, in a game full of drama. Lecce thought they had stolen all three points when Nikola Krstovic scored a 92nd minute opener but that was then cancelled out by Matteo Pessina scoring a penalty in the 96th minute for Monza.

THE TEAM NEWS

CAGLIARI

Nicolas Viola, Leonardo Pavoletti and Marco Mancosu are the three injury issues for Claudio Ranieri this weekend so they will be unavailable against Lecce.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-2-1): Scuffet; Hatzidiakos, Wieteska, Obert; Di Pardo, Prati, Deiola, Augello; Oristanio, Shomurodov; Gaetano

UNAVAILABLE: Viola (Injured), Pavoletti (Injured), Mancosu (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

LECCE

Mohamed Kaba is a doubt for this weekend’s trip to Sardinia but the likes of Yiber Ramadani, Lameck Banda and Kastriot Dermaku unavailable.

PREDICTED XI (4-4-2): Falcone; Gendrey, Baschirotto, Pongracic, Gallo; Oudin, Blin, Rafia, Dorgu; Krstovic, Piccoli

UNAVAILABLE: Ramadani (Injured), Banda (Injured), Dermaku (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Kaba (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Neither of these two sides would have expected there to be so many teams between themselves and the bottom three as we head into the final four games of the season. Lecce will believe they are all but safe but Cagliari could do with at least one more victory to really make sure. Both sides have enjoyed similarly impressive runs in recent months, built upon strong defensive play. Given that, a low-scoring affair in which the defences maintain their superiority seems likely.
