THE LOWDOWN

CAGLIARI

Following promotion back to the top-flight via the Serie B playoffs last season, Cagliari are beginning this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting just outside of the bottom three and the relegation places after a well-timed improvement in their form just before the March international break. The Sardinians are a lot more competitive than what had been expected of them.

Under the management of former Leicester City and Chelsea boss Claudio Ranieri, Cagliari do, though, come into this one on the back of a slender 1-0 defeat to Monza in their most recent outing, a couple of weeks ago. Prior to that defeat, they had been enjoying a four-match unbeaten run of form in Serie A.

HELLAS VERONA

After avoiding the drop in the end of season relegation playoff last year, Hellas Verona began this season with back-to-back victories – the second time ever with the first time being when they went and won their only Scudetto. Verona then went winless in 14 matches but Marco Baroni, formerly of Lecce, has finally got bit more of a tune out of his side.

They begin the weekend, though, still only two points clear of the bottom three and the relegation places. Verona suffered a 3-1 defeat at home to a strong AC Milan side a couple of weeks ago, which had followed back-to-back victories in which their good run of form meant they had suffered just one loss in five matches before that.

THE TEAM NEWS

CAGLIARI

Cagliari have attacking duo Andrea Petagna and Marko Rog out injured but both Leonardo Pavoletti and Marco Mancosu could return to action this weekend.

PREDICTED XI (4-4-1-1): Scuffet; Zappa, Wieteska, Dossena, Augello; Nandez, Makoumbou, Deiola, Jankto; Shomurodov; Lapadula

UNAVAILABLE: Petagna (Injured), Rog (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Pavoletti (Injured), Mancosu (Injured)

HELLAS VERONA

Thomas Henry has returned from suspension for Verona but they remain without the likes of Tomas Suslov and Juan Manuel Cruz for this one due to injuries.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Montipo; Tchatchoua, Magnani, Coppola, Cabal; Duda, Serdar; Swiderski, Folorunsho, Lazovic; Noslin

UNAVAILABLE: Suslov (Injured), Cruz (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

THE PREDICTION

Both of these sides have been through long stretches of the campaign where they have had a shout of being the worst, or at least second worst ahead of Salernitana, team in the league. Prior to the break, though, they both enjoyed much-needed improvement and will feel a little rejuvenated as we head into the final couple of months. They have both built their improved form upon defensive rigidity and a low-scoring encounter is expected.
