THE PREDICTION
Steve Clarke’s spell at Scotland has been weirdly bad yet well praised by many. They haven’t really dramatically improved since the 3-0 loss against Kazakhstan under Gordon Strachan and yet a few UEFA Nations League wins against Israel and Albania gave them the chance to sit eight men behind the ball against Serbia, win on penalties and reach their first major tournament since 1998. It is an achievement but it came about with some great fortune. They do come into this, though, on the back of a real sign of progress with their 1-0 win over Austria last month. That win keeps them in a strong position to finish in the top two and a playoff place. A victory against Israel, which they should get with home advantage, should mean they establish themselves as the second-placed side in the group.
