THE PREDICTION
Ukraine begin their preparation for the European Championships this summer with a friendly against Bahrain in which they are expected to win quite comfortably. There is personal importance for the players, though, as Andriy Shevchenko looks to narrow his 36-man preliminary squad down to the 26 required by UEFA on June 1. This is the only friendly before that date so the only opportunity for fringe players to show their worth. They will be without players that are playing outside of the already completed Ukrainian league such as backup goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, Eduard Sobol, Andriy Yarmolenko and the two Atalanta players Ruslan Malinovskiy and Viktor Kovalenko. That heavy rotation and weakened squad will likely lead to a slow and not very cohesive performance but the home team will still expect to win against a Bahrain team that are ranked 99th and will be focusing on their World Cup qualifiers against Cambodia, Iran and Hong Kong at the start of June.
