THE PREDICTION
Turkey are one of the fancied underdogs ahead of this summer’s European Championships. Their ability to raise their game for bigger occasions or better opponents was evident in the World Cup qualifiers in March whereby the Turks defeated the Netherlands and Norway with stylistic and comfortable ease but fell to a frustrating 1-1 draw against an admittedly slightly improved Latvia. They come up against one of the upcoming hosts of Turkey’s group stage matches in June in Azerbaijan. Azeri football has continued to rise throughout the 2010s both domestically and internationally. They disappointed in their recent qualifying campaigns but have remained frustrating for sides like Slovakia and Croatia. Senol Gunes will be looking to trim his squad from 30 to 26 after this match so it is likely to be an experimental lineup and changes against an Azerbaijan side that have the potential to be irritating and awkward. Turkey will of course be favourites but a draw would not be a surprise.
