THE PREDICTION
Croatia’s stagnation after the 2018 FIFA World Cup has been quite clear. An ageing squad that has lost some key veterans such as Vedran Corluka and Ivan Rakitic without the potential required motivation over those three years has seen them lose to both Spain and England in the Nations League then scrape Euro 2020 qualification with draws against Azerbaijan and Wales as well as a defeat to Hungary. That was then followed by a Nations League campaign in which they collected three points in six matches including the concession of 16 goals in those six games. Basically, in summary, they haven’t ‘got up for it’. A European Championships could be the carrot that creates a sense of urgency once more for Zlatko Dalic’s side. However, this isn’t even a friendly whereby squad places are on the line because Dalic has picked his final squad. They come up against an Armenia side that won all three of their World Cup qualifiers in March to top a group that includes Germany and Romania. Similar to Turkey’s struggle against Azerbaijan last week, this one might not be a straight-forward warm-up victory for the Croats and a low-scoring encounter is likely.
