THE PREDICTION

These are arguably the two teams that have most punched above their weight and over achieved in the last few years but they have experienced very different 2023/24 campaigns. Freiburg have maintained their steady progress, reaching the knockout playoffs of the UEFA Europa League and sitting in the top-half of the Bundesliga, whilst Union Berlin are languishing down at the bottom end of the table and very much involved in a relegation battle after finishing fourth last season. Union’s performances improved before the break and they will be a difficult to beat side in this second-half of the campaign with a low-scoring encounter to kick off the calendar year most likely.
