THE LOWDOWN

FRIEBURG

Freiburg’s inconsistency has prevented them from challenging for European places so far and they are yet to win in the Bundesliga since October 21st when they defeated Bochum. Since then, positive results in the Europa League have been offset by picking up just one point in the league, losing twice in the process which leaves them firmly adrift of the top six.

In mitigation though, Freiburg’s most recent two losses came away from home against tough opponents such as Bayer Leverkusen and RB Leipzig and the expectation is that results will improve again vs easier opposition on paper. Darmstadt at home for example, is a fixture that is likely to be seen as a must-win by Freiburg fans in particular.

DARMSTADT

Newly promoted Darmstadt were always going to find it extremely difficult this season in the Bundesliga and to have entered the final international break of 2023 outside the bottom three should be seen as a success. If they remain where they are in 15th-place right up until the end of the campaign, then it will be mission accomplished as far as they are concerned.

However, there is cause for concern within the Darmstadt camp, having taken just one point from their last four Bundesliga fixtures. But they did at least end a three-match losing streak in the league last time out thanks to a hard-fought 0-0 draw at home to Mainz, a game best left forgotten from a neutral’s perspective.

THE TEAM NEWS

FREIBURG

Attacking Mervin Rohl faces a race against time to be passed fit for this match due to a foot injury and with that in mind, Ritsu Doan will likely be on standby to start in the event that Rohl doesn’t make it. Christian Streich has a lot to contend with at present on the injury front with up to five players definitely ruled out here.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-3): Atubolu; Ginter, Lienhart, Gulde; Sildillia, Eggestein, Hofler, Weisshaupt; Rohl, Holer, Grifo

UNAVAILABLE: Gunter (Injured), Keitel (Injured), Kubler (Injured), Kyereh (Injured), Philipp (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Rohl (Injured), Sallai (Injured)

DARMSTADT

Centre-back Christoph Klarer is suspended, so it would be no surprise to see Darmstadt line-up here with Zimmermann, Giasula and Maglica forming a back three. At the other end of the pitch, striker Fraser Hornby is doubtful, but Braydon Manu definitely won’t feature, both players have ankle injuries.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-1-2): Brunst; Zimmermann, Gjasula, Maglica; Bader, Schnellhardt, Holland, Nurnberger; Mehlem; Pfeiffer, Skarke

UNAVAILABLE: Klarer (Suspended), Manu (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Hornby (Injured), Schuhen (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Despite their numerous injury problems, this Freiburg team is rich in depth and should they perform at the levels in which they are capable of then the expectation is that the hosts will prove too strong for Darmstadt. When considering Freiburg’s attacking players at the disposal of Streich up against the weakest defence in the Bundesliga, the only conclusion that can be drawn is that we are likely to see at least a couple of goals here from the home team on their way to three points.

BETTING TIP: FREIBURG TO WIN
