THE LOWDOWN

BORUSSIA DORTMUND

Borussia Dortmund will have nightmares about this particular fixture after the devastation of last season. It was Mainz who came to Dortmund on the final day of the campaign and cost Edin Terzic’s side the Bundesliga by holding them to a 2-2 draw, handing the title to Bayern Munich in the process. That alone should serve as huge motivation here for the hosts.

On the back of being frustrated away at Augsburg over the weekend, only three points will do for Dortmund, who will likely retain Donyell Malen in the starting line-up after his goal on Saturday. They currently sit fifth in the table, five points adrift of the top four and with pressure mounting on Terzic.

MAINZ

Mainz have endured a miserable campaign so far, winning just one of their 15 Bundesliga fixtures and only them and bottom-placed Darmstadt are still yet to accrue double-figure points in the league. But an unlikely victory here would give them a chance of spending the winter break outside of the bottom three should other results also go their way.

Their total lack of cutting edge in front goal has been key to Mainz’s lack of success. They are without a goal in their last three league games and have scored just once across their most recent five fixtures. That doesn’t bode well for them here when considering how hard it will be to keep a clean sheet.

THE PREDICTION

Quite simply a must-win game for Edin Terzic against the club that broke his and Borussia Dortmund hearts last May. Failure to do so may well see him out of work come Christmas when taking into account the gap emerging between Dortmund and those clubs above them in the table. Mainz’s attacking threat has been almost non-existent in recent weeks and provided Dortmund can break them down across 90 minutes, then the three points should be theirs.

BETTING TIP: BORUSSIA DORTMUND TO WIN TO NIL
