THE LOWDOWN

BAYERN MUNICH

After a dramatic weekend in the Bundesliga title race, one thing is now for certain. Bayern Munich’s 11-year grip on the ‘Meisterschale’ has never been so weak. A shock 0-1 defeat at home to Werder Bremen, combined with Bayer Leverkusen’s incredible late victory from behind away at RB Leipzig leaves the German champions seven points adrift of Xabi Alonso’s side.

How Bayern respond will be crucial here and Thomas Tuchel will also be under scrutiny. Anything less than a convincing three points and the gap closing to four points would be seen as a disaster. This fixture was originally scheduled for before the winter break before snow in Munich caused a postponement.

UNION BERLIN

Union Berlin’s upturn in form sees them sit just above the bottom three as things stand and now in a position to move forwards following that nightmare run of defeats earlier on in the campaign which surprised everyone as they struggled to cope with the demands of Champions League football alongside a punishing domestic schedule.

Key to their recent revival has been a restored level of defensive stability that they were renowned for in 2022-23. They are now coming off the back of consecutive clean sheets and this past weekend held Freiburg to a 0-0 draw away from home, backing up their hard-fought 2-0 victory against Koln prior to the winter break.

THE PREDICTION

Although it’s worth noting the backline of Union Berlin looks significantly more stable than earlier in the campaign, this is a wounded Bayern Munich side who will be desperate to prove a point and right a wrong following this past Sunday. Expect them to take out all their frustrations on Union and with Harry Kane spearheading the charge, any outcome other than a Bayern victory by at least two clear goals would be seen as a surprise.

BETTING TIP: BAYERN MUNICH TO WIN WITH -1 HANDICAP
