AUGSBURG PREVIEW: UP AND RUNNING AT THIRD TIME OF ASKING
After having picked up just one point from their opening two league games, Augsburg gave their fans something to really cheer about last time out with their best showing of the season so far by a long way. The hosts were excellent vs St. Pauli, responding brilliantly to a 4-0 thrashing at Heidenheim by scoring three times themselves against the newly promoted 2. Bundesliga champions.
With the score goalless at half-time, Augsburg came out of the traps like lightning in the second half, quickly taking the lead. They doubled their advantage midway through the half before St. Pauli pulled one back. But Augsburg made sure of the points late on.
MAINZ PREVIEW: DEFEAT LAST WEEKEND A HUGE DAMP SQUIB
Mainz remain one of the slow starters in the German top flight so far this campaign and it’s hard to see where that first win is coming from at present. A fair few would’ve hoped that a home clash with Werder Bremen would representing the turning point, especially when the visitors were reduced to ten men with the score at 1-1.
However, Mainz were sucker-punched by Werder and despite the man advantage, could not find an equaliser. Unsurprisingly the result was greeted by significant displeasure from Mainz fans, who know their side are in for what is likely to be a long battle for survival this season.

AUGSBURG VS MAINZ PREDICTION
Confidence within the Augsburg squad should be extremely high following that win against St. Pauli and now they are in a position to kick on. Mainz’s campaign has yet to really get started in their most recent defeat vs Werder represented a step back. Although they are more than capable of getting on the scoresheet at least once, Augsburg may well edge this one provided the hosts maintain those levels of performance shown vs St. Pauli. Back both teams to score, but Augsburg to win.
