THE LOWDOWN

MARSEILLE

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang completed a hat-trick with a second-half stoppage-time overhead kick to help Olympique de Marseille defeat Ajax by four goals to three in the group stages of the UEFA Europa League in midweek. The southerners produced a much-needed display to leave them at the top of their group, just above Brighton and Hove Albion.

It has been a generally inconsistent campaign for the home team, though, with Gennaro Gattuso’s mid-season appointment not yet being followed by any real consistent improvement. They are winless in their last four Ligue 1 matches and begin this weekend sitting in the bottom-half of the table.

RENNES

Following becoming the first team to lose to Olympique Lyonnais this season, prior to the November international break, Stade Rennais decided to part ways with manager Bruno Genesio, replacing the former Lyon boss with Julien Stephan. Stephan has started well with two wins out of two before this one.

A strong squad assembled by Rennes has been underperforming throughout the campaign with just two Ligue 1 victories before Stephan’s appointment. However, he began his second stint in charge with a 3-1 defeat of high flying Stade de Reims last weekend before following that up with a 3-0 hammering of Maccabi Haifa in Hungary on Thursday.

THE TEAM NEWS

MARSEILLE

Marseille only have one unavailable player, Valentin Rongier, for this weekend’s visit of Rennes as they try and ignite their form in Ligue 1.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Lopez; Clauss, Mbemba, Balerdi, Lodi; Kondogbia, Veretout; Ndiaye, Harit, Correa; Vitinha

UNAVAILABLE: Rongier (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

RENNES

Stade Rennais are without just the suspended Guela Doue for this one but they are able to name an unchanged eleven down south in Marseille.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-3): Mandanda; Wooh, Belocian, Theate; Bourigeaud, Le Fee, Matic, Truffert; Gouiri, Kalimuendo, Terrier

UNAVAILABLE: Doue (Suspended)

QUESTIONABLE:

THE PREDICTION

These two sides played out victories in European competition in midweek but both sides have been generally underwhelming throughout the campaign. They will, though, both believe and think they may have turned something of a corner as they prepare to do battle once more at Stade Velodrome. Marseille, with a fierce crowd, will boost their players who may be lacking energy from that game against Ajax and Rennes just appear to be clicking into gear so a high-scoring affair would appear quite likely on Sunday evening.
