THE LOWDOWN

UKRAINE

  • With the score at 1-1, Ukraine took full advantage of Sweden being reduced to ten men in extra time, scoring a winning goal with the final meaningful attack of the match to see them reach their first ever European Championship quarter-final.
  • After deploying a 4-3-3 formation over the course of the group stage, head coach Andriy Shevchenko switched tactics to a 3-5-2 against Sweden and will likely adopt a similar strategy vs England, with his side setup more defensively in a 5-3-2 formation.
  • Coming on as a substitute vs Sweden, striker Artem Besedin was subject to a horror tackle that saw Swedish Marcus Danielson sent off and Besedin unable to play any part, with his tournament now over due to the knee injury he sustained, whilst captain Andriy Yarmolenko is a doubt for the match against England, alongside Oleksandr Zubkov.

ENGLAND

  • England’s 2-0 triumph over Germany in the Round of 16 at Wembley has been considered arguably their greatest major international tournament victory since beating Argentina in the 2002 World Cup and firmly establishes their credentials as potential EURO 2020 winners.
  • For the first time in this summer’s European Championships, Gareth Southgate fielded three centre-backs in his starting line-up against Die Mannschaft, but against a team more likely to sit in and allow them the ball, the England boss is expected to revert back to the 4-2-3-1 formation utilised in the group stage.
  • Right wing-back Kieran Trippier is the player likely to be sacrificed for an extra midfield player, with both Mason Mount and Jack Grealish desperate to be afforded a start against Ukraine, Grealish after making a big impact as a substitute against Germany, setting up the second goal.

THE KEY STATS

  • Ukraine have scored two goals in three of their four matches at EURO 2020 – Ukraine to score over 1.5 goals
  • This is England’s third EURO final tournament quarter-final tie. Each of the previous three finished level and required a penalty shoot-out to decide the outcome – Match outcome to be decided by a penalty shoot-out
  • England have kept nine clean sheets in their last ten international matches – this includes each of their last six matches – England to keep a clean sheet
  • England have conceded the first goal in only one of their last 13 EURO final tournament matches – England to score the first goal

THE PREDICTION

Victory against Germany has left England fans daring to dream as the Three Lions head to Rome in what will be their first and only match of EURO 2020 to be played away from Wembley. With no raucous home crowd behind them, this represents an opportunity for Ukraine who will enter this contest as firm underdogs. Not being expected to win should play to the advantage of Andriy Shevchenko’s men, who have everything to gain and nothing to lose against their heavily fancied opponents, but it does look a daunting task for his side, facing the only country yet to concede a single goal at EURO 2020. In contrast, Ukraine have failed to keep a clean sheet in their four matches played so far and when taking into account the form of attacking midfielder Raheem Sterling, not to mention captain Harry Kane full of confidence after finally opening his goalscoring account in the Round of 16, England should prove simply too strong for Ukraine and have to be favoured for victory over 90 minutes.
