THE LOWDOWN

PORTUGAL

  • Despite what would appear to have been a routine 3-0 victory against Hungary, Portugal and Fernando Santos will be ever so slightly concerned by the lack of cohesion and cutting-edge prior to that late flurry of goals.
  • The Portuguese have been forced into evolving away from a style that had seen them remain extremely dogged but nick goals through their main man Cristiano Ronaldo. However, the extra attacking talent of Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Diogo Jota, Joao Felix, Andre Silva and so on has made Santos put more emphasis on attack without the patterns of play to supplement that style.
  • The only potential changes to the Portugal side could see rotation between their ageing centre-backs Pepe and Jose Fonte and Rafa Silva may come in for Diogo Jota after an impressive cameo towards the end of the match.

GERMANY

  • Germany failed to exploit any weaknesses France may have on Tuesday night as Joachim Loew’s final tournament in charge began with an opening match defeat at home to the world champions in which his side did manage to have 61% of the possession without much challenge to Hugo Lloris’ goal.
  • They will likely continue to be without Jonas Hofmann and Leon Goretzka due to injury which limits the options in midfield and Loew remains determined to play with a back three and Kimmich at right wing-back instead of defensive midfield. That lack of a ‘setting the tempo’ opening pass in their build-up play was fairly evident in a second-half performance whereby confusion reigned despite territorial dominance.
  • Retrospective action for Antonio Rudiger’s alleged bite on the back of Paul Pogba remains a possibility but completely unknown so, as it stands, the side up until the final third is expected to be unchanged. Leroy Sane or Timo Werner could come in for the ineffective Kai Havertz.

THE KEY STATS

  • Germany have won each of their last four international matches against Portugal – Germany to win
  • Portugal have kept seven clean sheets in their last ten EURO final tournament matches – Portugal to keep a clean sheet
  • Germany have scored three goals or more in three of their last four international matches against Portugal – Germany to score over 2.5 goals
  • Portugal are unbeaten in their last 12 EURO final tournament matches (penalty shoot-outs are counted as drawn matches) – Portugal or Draw (Double chance)
  • Germany won each of their last two international matches against Portugal without conceding a goal – Germany to win to nil

THE PREDICTION

A defeat for either side could be enormously costly heading into the final round of fixtures but a draw would probably suit both. Three points may not be enough to finish as one of the four best third-placed teams and a defeat for Portugal would leave them on three heading into a clash with the world champions France whereas a German loss would see them head into their final group match at home to Hungary on just three points, too. Given that so much rides on not losing the game, caution may prevail and a draw seems likely.

Tip: DRAW
