THE LOWDOWN

GERMANY

  • A devastating attacking display saw Germany record a 4-2 win over Portugal last time out to put them in a strong position to qualify for the round of 16 ahead of this final Group F fixture against Hungary.
  • The job is not done yet though and they will need at least a point to secure their passage to the knockout stages, while head coach Joachim Low will particularly want to see a defensive improvement here with his side having failed to keep a clean sheet so far.
  • There are a few players in the treatment room at the moment with Thomas Muller looking like the most likely absentee while Mats Hummels, Lukas Klostermann, Marcel Halstenberg and Ilkay Gundogan will all be monitored.

HUNGARY

  • Hungary’s excellent draw against France gives them an unlikely chance of progression in the “Group of Death” but they must go one step further and beat Germany in order to do so.
  • Barring a ten-minute spell at the end of their first game against Portugal, Marco Rossi’s side have proven difficult to break down so far and they will once again set up to frustrate their opponents here, and hope to nick a goal on the counter-attack.
  • Forward Adam Szalai is looking increasingly likely to miss out following a blow to head against France which could see Nemanja Nikolic come in to partner Roland Sallai up front, while Daniel Gazdag has withdrawn from the squad due to a knee injury.

THE KEY STATS

  • Germany won their most recent two international matches against Hungary without conceding a goal – Germany to win to nil
  • Germany have conceded the first goal in each of their last three EURO final tournament group stage matches – Hungary to score first
  • Hungary have lost only one of their last 13 international matches (W7 D5 L1) – Hungary or Draw (Double chance)
  • Hungary have drawn three of their last four EURO final tournament group stage matches - Draw
  • Hungary have kept just one clean sheet in their previous ten EURO final tournament matches – Germany to score

THE PREDICTION

The fact that Hungary still have a mathematical chance of progression is a huge credit to them given how unlucky there were to be drawn in Group F alongside reigning European champions Portugal, world champions France and their opponents here Germany. However, given the Germans’ ruthless attacking display against Portugal, it seems unlikely that Hungary will upset the odds here. Joshua Kimmich and Robin Gosens are likely to cause the Hungarian defence plenty of problems down each wing, and with the quality the Germans also possess in the centre – even if veteran Thomas Muller misses out – they should have enough about them to see out the win and book their passage to the round of 16.

Tip: Germany to win
