THE LOWDOWN

NETHERLANDS

  • The Dutch were one of only three teams to have gone through the group stage with a 100% record and they have steadily improved with each game both going forward and in defence.
  • A key conundrum facing Frank de Boer is who should partner Memphis Depay up front as, after Wout Weghorst started the first two matches, Donyell Malen impressed after coming into the side against North Macedonia.
  • Fellow striker Luuk de Jong’s tournament is over due to a knee injury sustained in training but there are no other injury concerns and, aside from the Weghorst/Malen debate, the rest of the side essentially picks itself.

CZECH REPUBLIC

  • Czech Republic emerged from Group D as one of the best third-placed teams and they have flown under the radar somewhat and will quietly fancy their chances of upsetting the Netherlands here.
  • They are heavily reliant on Patrik Schick to supply the goals as he is the only Czech player to have found the net so far at EURO 2020, but there is decent quality elsewhere in the park with West Ham pair Vladimir Coufal and Tomas Soucek having been consistent performers so far.
  • Left-back Jan Boril is suspended for this round of 16 tie after picking up two yellow cards in the group stage so head coach Jaroslav Silhavv may opt for either Pavel Kaderabek or Ales Mateju to fill the gap.

THE TEAM NEWS

PREDICTED XI (3-4-1-2): Stekelenburg; De Vrij, De Ligt, Blind; Dumfries, F. De Jong, De Roon, Van Aanholt; Wijnaldum; Depay, Malen

QUESTIONABLE:

CZECH REPUBLIC

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Vaclik; Coufal, Celustka, Kalas, Kaderabek; Soucek, Holes; Masopust, Barak, Jankto; Schick

UNAVAILABLE: Boril (Suspended)

QUESTIONABLE: Darida (Injured)

THE KEY STATS

  • Netherlands have scored two or more goals in each of their last ten international matches – Netherlands over 1.5 goals
  • Memphis Depay has scored nine times in his last 10 appearances for the Netherlands – Memphis Depay to score anytime
  • Memphis Depay has scored the first goal of the game in three of the Netherlands’ last four international matches – Memphis Depay to score the first goal
  • Czech Republic have won four of their last six international matches against the Netherlands – Czech Republic to win
  • There has been at least one goal scored during the first half in each of the last seven international matches between the Netherlands and Czech Republic – Goal to be scored in the first half

THE PREDICTION

The expectations on the Dutch camp have increased following their impressive performances so far but this will likely be a tougher test than any they faced in Group C. However, with Memphis Depay now hitting his stride and the likes of Denzel Dumfries and Georginio Wijnaldum impressing so far, you would fancy Frank de Boer’s side to have too much for their opponents here. The Czechs are capable of frustrating the Dutch initially, and could hold out until half-time, but outside of Patrik Schick they are a little lacking in quality in the attacking areas. The class of the Dutch should ultimately tell, so consider the double result market.
