THE LOWDOWN

WOLVES

  • Wolves’ excellent run of form continues with them having won three of their last four in all competitions without conceding a goal. Whilst they have struggled at times going forward, scoring three goals against Sheffield Utd in the FA Cup this past weekend will have injected some much-needed confidence into their front players.
  • Centre-back Romain Saiss is away with Morocco at the Africa Cup of Nations and will likely be replaced by Fernando Marcal in the centre of defence with Rayan Ait Nouri playing left-wing-back, however Wolves won’t have any of their injured players back available for this match.

SOUTHAMPTON

  • A resounding 4-1 for Southampton in midweek against Brentford extended their unbeaten run to five games in all competitions and saw them move into 11th-placed in the Premier League heading into this latest round of fixtures
  • There is a doubt over striker Armando Broja after he suffered a head injury on Tuesday night, whilst right-back Valentino Livramento remains absent through a knee problem that has kept him out since Boxing Day.

THE PREDICTION

Both sides have reason to be optimistic going into this match, with confidence coursing through each camp when taking into account their recent results. Southampton’s offensive potency has hugely impressed in their last few games, particularly this past midweek, but in Wolves they face the second strongest defence in the Premier League with just 14 goals conceded so far this season. The hosts won’t sacrifice that defensive stability even if they are at home and Southampton could be in for an afternoon of frustration. However, Wolves’ effective rear-guard has come at a cost as goals have at times been hard to come by for them in the Premier League. It would therefore, be no surprise if the two teams cancelled each other out here and under 2.5 goals scored for what would be the tenth straight league fixture involving Wolves has to be favoured. In terms of the overall result, both sides will be desperate to keep their respective unbeaten runs going and could lead to them settling for a point apiece, which likely wouldn’t be seen as a bad result for either.

Tip: UNDER 2.5 GOALS
